Emergency cutting tool has been supplied to MWCC. Allspeeds Ltd design and manufacture the Webtool range of emergency cutting tools and other cutting & gripping tools. In addition to the standard range, Allspeeds have also manufactured a bespoke emergency cutting tool for a client. They were looking for an ROV tool to use in emergency situations out at sea.
Emergency Cutting Tool for MWCC
The emergency cutting tool was supplied to an organisation operating a number of floating production storage and offloading systems. The tool will be used in the work of the Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC), an independent company that provides well-containment equipment and technology in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GOM).
The GOM is subject to extreme weather conditions, such as tropical storms and hurricanes, due to its geographical location. An emergency cutting tool was required by the client should response efforts ever need to be put on hold for an approaching storm that could potentially be very dangerous and cause concern for the safety of those involved.
For the emergency cutting tool to be used in American waters, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) had to approve the tool. The function and cutting procedure of the emergency cutting tool were tested by them. In order to come to a conclusion they needed to see the product in action. We decided to conduct a live function and factory acceptance test to show the ABS our bespoke ROV tool. In August 2012, ABS visited Allspeeds’ headquarters to witness the tool cut through 128mm dyneema rope. They were very pleased with the tool overall and particularly with its functionality, and approved it for use in the Gulf of Mexico.
The Webtool emergency cutting tool was dispatched in September 2012 and will be placed on a ship in the Gulf of Mexico. There, it will be ready for use in an any emergency situation and be able to be deployed in a rapid response. The tool is a bespoke softline cutter and it’s features are listed below.
• A full stainless steel construction.
• A jaw opening of 400 x 250mm.
• Designed to cut in 2 seconds (maximum).
• Hydraulically powered.
Allspeeds Ltd appreciated the opportunity to create the bespoke emergency cutting tool. We are very proud that the ROV tool will be used during emergency response situations in the Gulf of Mexico. The company looks forward to working on similar projects in the future and our continued relationship with the client.
